How to benefit from weakness



Every day is a challenge and we all have our own goals. Success on one scale and failure on another. If you want success to be your destination, than there are things you’ll have to handle.

Don’t worry of failure, its a normal part of progress. Each time we fail - we erase one misleading path, raising our chances of success. The top secret here is obvious, don’t stop. For example, you were working hard for 10 years and failed for 9 999 times. «Its enough!» you thought and quit. After it, some of guys or girls you worked with, took the lead. And finally business succeed. On 10 000’s time. But without you. So keep up until you succeed and don't stop after.


If you want something and work hard for it to happen, it will. Maybe not today, not even tomorrow. But definatly will.

    The path for everyone is exclusive and you can’t just base your activity on somebody’s else experience. It might not work. But keeping it in mind will do the trick.

    You can take into consideration all your weaknesses. Knowing those, you can:

    - Be ready for everything;

    - Have time to think of possible solutions;

    - Try to avoid them;

    - Use them for your benefit;

    - Rethink your strategy;

    - Be realistic, while planning activities;

    - e.t.c.


    There are many more ways it helps. We usually don’t think of weakness until they ruin something. Then - its a real pain. It is hard to capitalize and think of it.  Best ones are ready.

    Information is your weapon. You can use it wisely, or keep it on the shelf. At any case, having it in your arsenal is better than not.

    Now to weaknesses. In business, there are two worlds around you. One is outside your company: market, government, competition. Another one is inside: colleagues, hierarchy, structure, goals. Today will take at a look at «inside». It is hard to deliver high quality products and win competition when you have inner problems.

    So what weaknesses your business might have and how to transform them in to strengths:

    Colleagues don’t share company goals

    Well if it is so, there will be no goals. Everyone should be involved and understand what is going on?


Possible solution:

    Personal understanding and conversations. At first, you should consider your own understanding of those goals. Are there any? Are they right? Are they for good? Sure every business works for the  profit, its a must but It can’t be all. Imagine yourself in the world where are only money, no people, no stuff, no air. How long can you stand there?

    When your company goals are clear to you and you believe in them. Start talking to people. Find out what they think. Don’t push, you require information. At the moment you start convincing someone who don’t share your goals, you’ll fail in gathering information. Others won’t be sincere with you.

    After you get the whole picture, you are ready and get options on what to do.


Structure create walls

    Each mechanism has a structure. All parts work together on one goal. Now think of a dog who's nerves decided not to deliver commands from brain to legs. It will fall and then die. Same happens to every company. There is a lot of work. Departments start fulfilling their own KPI goals and often don’t care about others.

    Possible solution: Draw failure models of your structure. Its a tough question, and easiest solution is to try ruin your company yourself (theoretically of course). You know your business, imagine what happens if you attack one of your departments with a virus. Take them out and think what would happen to the rest of the company. Find those weakest spots in the business. And than start talking again. You’ll know whom to ask. Every department which is in a communication chain with those high priority spots in your structure.

    It is much better to fail on a training than in the real world.


Documentation

    You want everything under control and employees swim in the ocean of papers? Well, that sail is more like a sinking boat. If we have a goal of «catching a fish», but we spend days of evaluating each rod, bait and spinner, we might not even make it to the river. The business world is tough and you’ll never be able to control everything. But what you can do…

    Possible solution: Realize, watch and delegate. Realize that there is a weakness. Watch people around you. Delegate authority. If employees talk not of your goals, but of documentation they have to do - their only goal is documentation, not success. Use the technology and help your employees do their job. They should concentrate on results and not on the process. Otherwise every process will automatically extend. Remember that business is one mechanism. Documentation is not a wall, but its very much alike. Delegate authority to other managers, teach them how to control the process. Make them create their own evaluation technics. Be ready and know which way you are going.


Lost souls

    There are people everywhere who lose their way in life. They will influence people around them. It might happen because of their sights on the world, maybe its their character, bad experience or else.

    Possible solution: Find and help. HR people must be involved and follow career of employees. You might not see the change yourself, only with people you often work with. Lost soul might show himself at any moment. So there should be some watch over. If HR people are responsible for each employee and his/her development, they will see changes. Every business is the organism and if some department got sick, others will feel it. After lost one is found, you need to validate his goals and reasons. If they are «call for help», you need to bring back inspiration and involve. If not, maybe its time to part your ways.


Life cycle

    Everything has it’s life cycle. Each mechanism. Each organism. And each business as well. The picture will show better:
   
   
    Based on the current stage of business, it requires some activity and solutions. Let's make it simple here: employees might be happy on 2nd and 3d stage, might be confused and worried on 1st and 4th. Things can get out of control on each stage, but with different situations.

    Possible solution: Know your stage. First of all you need a clear vision of your current situation. You might want something to live forever, but be realistic, it is better to change the situation before it gets out of control. Changes make life go on. So don't stop.



    There are no weaknesses. Only levers of success. You just need to know how they operate.
